Bio-Diplomacy

international co-operation

Bio-diplomacy – international co-operation in environmental protection – is a concept pioneered by B.I.O. at a time when civic leaders, international organisations and the world community as whole had notfully realised the urgency of adopting common environmental policy as a priority. It focuses on the interdependence of all forms of life and calls upon diplomats and people of influence to engage in a collective endeavour in defence of the environment. Joint efforts to protect the environment can boost international relations and act as a bridge between global impetus and decision-making at the national and local levels.

Bio-diplomacy is an opportunity for the aspirations of sovereign states and civil society to converge in pursuit of long-term international environmental policy and action. At the same time, bio-diplomacy actively supports efforts to maintain biological and cultural diversity and seeks to improve human relations and to attain the goal of world peace by replacing current diplomatic attitudes with a complete international and intercultural perspective. Within this framework, respect for human rights and the existence of multi-ethnic and multi-cultural societies is an undeniable principle. International co-operation in environmental protection enhances quality of life and strengthens efforts for freedom and peace.fully realised the urgency of adopting common environmental policy as a priority. It focuses on the interdependence of all forms of life and calls upon diplomats and people of influence to engage in a collective endeavour in defence of the environment. Joint efforts to protect the environment can boost international relations and act as a bridge between global impetus and decision-making at the national and local levels.

For the past 20 years, ambassadors and dignitaries from many countries have joined the B.I.O. initiative for bio-diplomacy, acknowledging the environment as a priority in international law and international relations, and promoting a society that acts in harmony with nature. Within this framework, B.I.O. has published 56 chapters in volumes of proceedings from international conferences and 20 articles in BioNews on the subject of bio-diplomacy. Moreover, since 1985, many conferences and symposia have been held in cooperation with foreign embassies in Athens, including the embassies of France, Japan, Russia, Czechia, Turkey, India, the UK, Israel and Ukraine. An extensive chapter on “Bio-Diplomacy” is featured in Bio-Syllabus for European Environmental Education, an 880-page textbook available in print and electronically (CD-Rom). Based on this pioneering material is B.I.O.’s e-learning course on “Bio-Diplomacy,” which will soon be available online as part of our extensive e-learning programme in environmental education. Written contributions by B.I.O. on the subject of diplomacy and international cooperation in environmental protection have appeared in proceedings from several conferences and events, as well as in the international press.
