environmental economics

With society experiencing a range of hurdles in seeking a compromise between the legitimate needs of development and the fragile environmental balances, the world economy is now at the point of radically changing its attitude towards the environment. Since its inception, B.I.O. encourages institutions, decision-makers, corporate leaders, and all concerned citizens, to adopt progressive innovations and to follow biocentric pathways in their activities. In today’s dynamically expanding global society, environmental protection is a “genuine” profit for humanity and the only vehicle for achieving a better quality of life.

To offer a new vision in reconciling economic progress and environmental protection, B.I.O. has proposed the development of three-dimensional economics, where quality of life, health, culture, education, and the protection of biodiversity and natural resources are the most essential elements for growth. Only through this new approach to the concept of profit can we achieve equitable and safe global management, which will guarantee a balanced society for the future.
B.I.O. has been a pioneer in mobilising the economic driving force since 1985. We have been among the first institutions worldwide to link the economy and the environment and to invite businesses everywhere to espouse environmental values. At a time when few had realised that environmental protection and economic development are complementary and not mutually exclusive, B.I.O. had already held many meetings and awareness-raising activities promoting environmental business strategies.

B.I.O. has organised 8 environmental business conferences, in Greece and abroad, with the participation of corporate leaders, scholars and specialists from many countries. We have also organised roundtable discussions in cooperation with the Athens and London Money Show, the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Italian Chamber of Commerce, the Harvard Club of New York and other prestigious institutions. The B.I.O. President has spoken at major business fora such as the World Bank’s Annual Conference of Development Economics, the German World Bank Forum, the Economist meetings, the State of the World Forum, the Industrial Society, the Fairer World Forum in Brussels and other events.

B.I.O. has published 6 books on business and the environment, and 52 chapters in the volumes of proceedings from our international conferences deal with the subject of economics. Forty articles in BioNews also feature extensive coverage of environmental economics, cleaner production, green finance and other such issues. A comprehensive chapter on “Bio-Economics” is published in Bio-Syllabus for European Environmental Education, an 880-page textbook available in print and electronically (CD-Rom). Based on this pioneering material is B.I.O.’s e-learning course on “Bio-Economics,” which will soon be available online as part of our e-learning programme in environmental education. Finally, within the framework of the European Union’s Phare and Leonardo da Vinci Training Programmes, B.I.O. developed and implemented a wide range of educational material and teaching modules on environmental economics, which were used in training activities in Europe and in EU accession countries.
