Biopolis – Sustainable Urban Development 2011

The online course provided a fully featured approach to the new trends regarding sustainable urban development programmes. The material is very useful to me because my Ph.D. thesis is about promoting sustainable development policies in the Romanian economy. Also, the course provided the basic background for developing new investment projects, and the practical examples may become real opportunities for developing new activities and SMEs in Romania. Tache Florin, Ph.D. Student, The Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies, Romania

The online course offered a new structuralized perspective on the importance of sustainable urban development. At present, the Romanian scientific literature has few resources that are up to date related to this field. As a potential teacher at The Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies, in the field of Environmental Policies, this course offered me the possibility to acquire a basic background in my research and also to accumulate useful knowledge for my further activity. The first valuable aspect of the “Biopolis: Sustainable Urban Development” course was the fact that the course was organised in an excellent manner, having separate modules for each issue, which helps a lot with understanding and using the information. The second valuable aspect was the fact that the course provided the most important correlations between the problems of managing the urban development in a sustainable manner, under the circumstances of growing pollution pressures. Oana–Cătălina Ţăpurică, Ph.D. Student, The Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies, Romania

I have always thought that this kind of material is something that everyone should know about, read about and remember about. It is common knowledge and can help each and every one of us to be more aware of what is going on in the world and how one can participate in making it better. This course expanded my knowledge on the subject and will definitely help me write more about the connection between food, agriculture and environment in a way that will reach people’s hearts and minds. Ramona-Mariana Dragomir, Freelance Writer, Bucharest, Romania

The material has been very helpful to me, as it covers subjects which have only occasionally been addressed in my faculty’s curricula, but which are, in my opinion, essential both nowadays and in a future perspective. The most valuable aspects were the approach towards key-subjects on the current agenda, as well as the comprehensive and coherent informational content provided. I plan to further incorporate the information and knowledge acquired in my activity as an environmental and sustainability consultant in the consultancy company, which I plan to establish in the upcoming months. Natalia Ciobanu, MSc Student in Environmental Management and Protection, Faculty of Environmental Science and Engineering, Babes-Boylai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania

This course helped me greatly in understanding the intimate relationship between our need for greater quality and quantity of food and environmental issues. People will always need food. This course showed me which paths must be followed in order to show people the importance of keeping a balance between our needs and nature’s needs. Adriana Haragea, Viitor Plus Association, Bucharest, Romania

The course has proven to be very helpful, addresses current issues in well organized chapters with a clear image and definition of concepts. I was pleased and honoured to have had access to it and I am considering including the “Food, agriculture and the environment” course’s main information and debatable aspects in the training sessions for youngsters, as part of the AIDA educational programs. The issues I consider most valuable are the ones concerning the global character of the subject and the ethical applications of it. Thank you for everything! Cristina Sinziana Buliga, AIDA (Association for Alternative Sustainable Initiatives), Bucharest, Romania

Green Salary 2010-2011

I am involved in bio-rural tourism, and the material was very useful to me because I could find a lot of new ways and examples of how to combine environmental protection activities with an activity that can generate money. I have a youth organisation that is involved in activities for preserving the environment and in writing projects for youth in protecting the environment and preserving the regional identity. This information was very useful for me and for my colleagues, because we learned a lot of new things about the environment and green salaries. Iov Claudia Anamaria, Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca, Master’s Student, Romania

Thank you for the opportunity to complete this training programme. I have found many aspects related to my work that I was not aware of. Now I know that a good management of the soil and water can provide us not only economic growth, but a good environment/ground for wellness and future development as well. I can teach people how to find the motivation of putting in practice the theory and how to benefit from their work, as well as make the environment benefit from it. Severina-Andreea Batca Research & Development Assistant, Romania

It helped me to better understand the concept of sustainable development and it gave me concrete examples of how this concept can be included in every part of our lives. Anca Andreea Calugaru, Becker Consult Consultant, Romania

My studies focus on the use of European funds and financial instruments for regional development. This also includes financial instruments used for the development of human resources and the protection of the environment. The course has given me a broader perspective on the possibilities of job creation whilst preserving the environment. Anca Anitei, National School of Political and Administrative Sciences, Bucharest, Romania

The online course offered a new structuralized perspective on the topic of “Green Salary.” At present, the Romanian scientific literature has few resources that are up to date related to this field. The first valuable aspect incorporated in the Green Salary course was the fact that the course had been organized in an excellent manner, having separate modules for each field of interest, which helps a lot in understanding and using the information. The second valuable aspect was the fact that the course provided the most important topics in regard to assuring the adequate implementation of the green salary concept, emphasizing innovation and the importance of adopting such a perspective both for the environment and for society. Oana Catalina Tapurica, MS Student, Romania

This course module has helped me recognize the imperative need of developing programs that would be further on translated into environmental policies and has also given me a much wider analysis of the countless job opportunities and research subjects that result from actively protecting the environment. I believe the most valuable aspect of the course is related to the numerous environmental policies that could be developed in the future, policies that would contribute to a different, much wider development of the job market and would end in a win-win situation in so many aspects: economic growth, a healthier and more relaxing environment, more jobs on the market, more comfortable housing and transportation conditions, cleaner production of consumer and industrial goods. In the future, I hope I will be able to incorporate most of the information of this course into clear environmental policies that will contribute to the sustainability of our planet. Irina Gabriela Pele, MA Graduate, Vrije University, Romania

The online course provided a fully featured approach on the new European Union trends, regarding the common sustainable development programme. The material is very useful because my PhD paper is about promoting sustainable-related development policies within the Romanian economy. Also, the course provided the basic background for developing new investment projects, and the practical examples may become real opportunities for developing new activities and SMEs in Romania. Florin Tache, Student, The Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies, Romania

I was not aware of the green salary concept until I started taking this course. It is a very valuable concept that, if taken into account and implemented, will not only create more jobs, but also help the environment. It touches almost every sector of the working system and, thus, is easy to implement if people realize how important and highly recommendable it is. Personally, I think the concept is like a breath of fresh air brought into the how-to-help-and-protect-the-environment scheme and it will definitely help me throughout my future research and writing. Natural Resources 2010

The material presented in the course modules is very useful in my work. Correlation between environmental factors, both historically, and of their evolution in time, until today, and the presentation of the impact on these factors of the economic activities that can cause damage, have been well summarized. Presentation of all aspects, the historical, economic, etc. and their importance for sustainable development creates an overview. Most valuable aspects were those related to prevention of the dangers that can threaten environmental factors and thus, damage lives. In my work, as I am working on biodiversity and the department must give points of view on economic activities that may have an impact on the environment, I think that the chapters on dangers threatening and ways of protection are really helpful. I think this course helped me to have an overview in all aspects: historical, economic, social, inter-and intra-specific relationships. Nicoleta-Nona Ardeleanu, Regional Environmental Protection Agency of Bacau, Romania

Oana Catalina Tapurica, Ms. Student, Romania

I am a student in the final year in Environmental Chemistry and this course completed my faculty studies because it offered me a global view of how nature is connected and affected by human actions. I appreciate mostly that this course also presented positive methods and cases, solutions in environmental protection from which humans and nature can benefit. Petruca Ancuta, Romania

The materials were well structured and covered both scientific aspects and methodological ones. The information can be easily applied in biology, ecology, geography, geology and chemistry classes. The course model was very useful to be replicated for students, both in formal and non-formal activities. Carmen Bucovala, Deputy High School Headmaster, Romania

This course helps me in my daily work because I found new information regarding forest administration in different areas in the world. I can also use some information that can be applicable in our county, for instance managing woodlands for recreation purposes and measures to reduce the impact of the main dangers for forests. Emilian Ilie Cornea, Engineer, Forest Administrator, Covasna, Romania

In the material covered in the course I found new information linked to my field of expertise which I can use in my daily work as well. I found extremely useful the courses related to water pollution and contamination and measures to control water degradation, soil protection and sustainable development, soil erosion and fertility loss and controlling soil degradation. Courses regarding silviculture and forest management also provide useful information for me as we are in charge of issuing environmental permits for forest exploitation. The whole course enhanced my knowledge and I can share this knowledge with my colleagues at work. Ileana Luminita Cornea, Engineer, Environmental Protection Agency Covasna, Romania

This course helps me to bring more materials in class, in my attempt to make my students aware of the environmental problems in our area, which are in fact some of the global environmental issues. We have to deal with water pollution, soil erosion and so on, and my people can be involved in such ecological activities which imply working with adults, so, consequently, the local community can benefit indirectly from the knowledge I have acquired by attending this course, too. Loredana Matei, Teacher, Scoala cu clasele I-VIII Asau, Romania

This course was complex and gave me the opportunities to learn new things about natural resource ecology. Thank you for this e-learning course. Pascu Marioara, Professor of Geography, School Asau, Romania

Sustainable Agriculture 2010

The course on Sustainable Agriculture helped me not only in that it improved my knowledge about the EU’s CAP, but it will also help me in my daily work as a consultant in the area of European funds. Anca-AndreeaCalugaru, Junior Consultant, Romania

My studies focus on the use of European funds and financial instruments for regional development. This also includes financial instruments used for agriculture. The course has given me a broader perspective on the impact of agricultural activities and the way the EU’s financial instruments must be used to ensure environmental and agricultural sustainability. Anca Anitei, Student, Romania

“Sustainability” is a key concept and priority of my employer organisation – the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality. Therefore, more knowledge in this particular field was very necessary and appreciated. The topics covered by the course will help me better understand the agricultural policy issues discussed in Brussels and therefore a better reporting to my employer and an enhanced ability to identify cooperation projects which relate to sustainable agriculture. I must say that the course made me realise how the “ideal” (or at least better) European agriculture should look like, considering that I know only two extreme models: the very modern/intensive Dutch agriculture (with considerable impact on the environment) and the traditional Romanian agriculture (highly inefficient). However, the dilemma still remains (for policy makers): how to make EU agriculture more environment-friendly and animal-friendly, while keeping it competitive on the world market. Anda Popescu, Agricultural Advisor, Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Romania

I needed to study more European Legislation for Agriculture and Common Agricultural Policies, because my study area is situated within the Danube’s floodplain system and it took me some time to understand the interdependencies between agriculture and natural protected areas from this geographical area. Gheorghe Clota, PhD Student, Romania

The courses were very useful for me because I am still in the process of learning and accumulating information for my future carrier. At the university, we have courses on the CAP and other EU policies, but we never talk about biopolitics or the environment. This is why this course was for me just what I needed for a better understanding of agriculture. Iov Claudia Anamaria, Master’s Student, Romania

My father is doing organic agriculture. This course helped me to see the benefits of this system. Monica Parpalea, Student, Romania

The online course offered a new structuralized perspective on the topic of Sustainable Agriculture. The first valuable aspect of the Sustainable Agriculture course was the fact that the course had been organised in an excellent manner, having separate modules for each environmental issue, which helps a lot in understanding and using the information. The second valuable aspect was the fact that the course provided the most important regulations of the European Union regarding agricultural policy, including a short description of every piece of law. Ţăpurică Oana–Cătălina, Master’s Student, Romania

I am not a teacher but I find this course valuable because it offers me a glimpse into the EU Common Agriculture Policy (CAP) and made me want to further study this domain. Petruca Anca, Romania

The knowledge from this course does not affect my work in a direct manner; however, because I am working in the field of Sustainable Development, I need to gain knowledge in different areas where the concept can be applied. I chose agriculture as one of them, as I have been indirectly in contact with it ever since I was young (my father is an agronomic engineer) and I was able to see the difficulties involved, and also because I collaborated in 2009 in a study called “ICT and Agriculture” which sparked my interest for organic agriculture. Olivia Popescu, National Centre for Sustainable Development, Romania

I am deeply grateful for having the opportunity to complete this course, because I have found many aspects related to my work that I was not aware of. Now I know that a good management of the soil and water can provide not only economic growth, but a good environment/ground for wellness and future development. I can teach people how to find the motivation for putting into practice the theory and how to benefit from their work, as well as how to make the environment benefit from it. Severina-Andreea Batca, Research & Development Assistant, Romania

In my work as a Project Assistant, this course on Sustainable Agriculture helps by endowing me with a better understanding of the challenges in agriculture today. It is especially important for me, working for an organization that promotes sustainable development, to have acquired specific knowledge on the European agricultural sector. Although my work does not deal with agriculture directly, agricultural practices are an absolutely crucial aspect of any country’s sustainable development. I look forward to incorporating the knowledge I acquired in my work, especially in the writing of new projects, potentially dealing with agriculture or related themes, such as rural development. Alexandra Stef, National Centre for Sustainable Development, Romania

The most valuable aspect is the opportunity to travel on-line through very well structured material. I will be able to incorporate it in my work, having a better general view into sustainable agriculture. Gabriela Iordan, Human Resources Responsible, Romania

The online course offered a new structuralized perspective on the topic of Sustainable Agriculture. The course provided a fully featured approach upon the new European Union trends regarding the common sustainable development programme in agriculture. The material is very useful because, in Romania, agriculture is still a basic occupation for most of the people living in villages, and our country really needs strategies and policies that aim to ensure the growth and competitiveness of this economic sector. Also, the course provided the basic background for developing new investment projects in agriculture, and the practical examples may become real opportunities for the people involved in this field. Florin Tache, Student, The Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies, Romania

Sustainable Forest Protection and Management 2011-2013

As a potential teacher at The Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies in the field of Environmental Policies, this course offered me the possibility to acquire a basic background for my research and also to accumulate useful knowledge for my further activity. The first valuable aspect of the Sustainable Forest Protection and Management course was the fact that the course is organised in an excellent manner, having separate modules for each issue which helps a lot in understanding and using the information. The second valuable aspect is the fact that the course addressed the most important problems of managing woodlands in a sustainable manner under the circumstances of increased population growth pressures. Oana–Cătălina Ţăpurică, Ph.D. Student, The Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies, Romania

The online course provided a complete overview of the role and importance of sustainable forest protection and management. The material is very useful because my Ph.D. thesis is on the promotion of sustainable development policies in the Romanian economy. Also, the course provided the basic background for developing new investment projects, and the practical examples may become real opportunities for developing new activities and SMEs in Romania. Florin Tache, Ph.D. Student, The Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies, Romania

I have always wanted to learn more about forest protection, but, unfortunately, my university programme only had a small part dedicated to it. The material is packed with crucial and genuine information about how important forests are and how everyone can take part in the process of protecting and managing them. Personally, I think that this course has given me a lot more information than any other material that I have read in the last two years, and it will make a huge difference when I write about environmental issues and ways to get involved.
