In an attempt to strengthen Hellenic-Ukrainian friendship and promote collaboration on economic and environmental issues between the two countries, the Biopolitics International Organisation organised a Hellenic-Ukrainian Symposium, under the auspices of the Ambassador of Ukraine in Athens, Mr. Boris Korneyenko. The symposium was held on November 8, 1996, at the Yacht Club of Vouliagmeni, and featured Dr. Stanislav Sokolenko, Chairman of UKRIMPEX Joint Stock Company, the largest private initiative in Ukraine, as keynote speaker.

In this crucial period of transition, the importance of bio-environmental protection as a genuine profit for society cannot be overlooked. Eastern European countries have long suffered the consequences of environmental abuse. They are, therefore, very aware of the urgency of adopting new policy, where preventative measures will lower the risk of environmental deterioration and secure a long-term management of natural resources. Furthermore, this preventative policy will have the potential of evolving into a viable and profitable business strategy.

In the spirit of bio-diplomacy, the hope was for this symposium to add new dimensions to the issue of international relations and further co-operation to safeguard our planet for the generations to come. Moreover, within the framework of the development of a global bio-culture for the next millennium, the event stressed the fact that bios and the bio-environment should constitute the core component of every action and thought. The development of every endeavour with the aim of promoting the interdependence between the bio-environment and human culture, can broaden our horizons and contribute towards a grassroots mobilisation for the protection of bios.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of the Biopolitics International Organisation, I would like to thank H.E. the Ambassador of Ukraine Mr. Boris Korneyenko, for having placed this event under his auspices, George and Titi Apostolopoulos for their cordial sponsorship, as well as Alpha Credit Bank for their contribution. A very special appreciation is also extended to all the B.I.O. sponsors for their ongoing support of the efforts to promote biocentric values and make this world a better place for the future.
