Biopolis – Sustainable Urban Development 2011

The given material helped me to broaden my view in the area of sustainable urban management. While the teaching of urban ecology at our institute is limited to a few lessons, it encouraged me to offer a more extensive concept of this topic in the teaching process. I mostly appreciated that the theoretical basis was expanded with interesting examples or case studies. While my field of study is based on biologic systems and their responses to environmental factors, I find it interesting and innovative to implement the use of green (living) energy as a renewable source in urban planning. I am a chemist who presently works at the environmental department. I had no knowledge about urban ecology, so these presentations were very useful for me. I will be teaching students soon, and therefore need more information on the environmental sciences. Food, Agriculture and the Environment 2011-2013

Because I am a chemist teaching in the environmental department, I need to enrich my knowledge of other environmental areas, so this is the most valuable purpose of the course for me. The study material was full of useful information for me which could be used in some of my lectures. Also, the ability to study at my own pace and with no travelling for lectures was a big advantage of the e-learning course. Marianna Molnarova, Researcher, Department of Environmental Ecology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava, Bratislava, Slovak Republic

I am a tourism referent, I do not work with tourists only though, I also prepare to excursions and some leisure activities for primary and secondary schools with nature/environmental topics. In the future, I would like to start something like a permaculture farm that will become gradually more or less self-sufficient with supporting income from tourism activity. A farm or a permacultural system of farming and forestry would be a place of interest in itself. Even if I do not succeed, I will try to show the younger generations the concept of a sustainable world and encourage them not to give up on it and hopefully when they grow up and gain the appropriate education they can follow the idea. I appreciated the course as a whole – the connection between lots of points of view and the complexity of the course. Thank you a lot! Sustainable Forest Protection and Management 2011-2013

The given material helped me to extend my knowledge on forest management. The texts are very useful in teaching environmental science, as they present general facts about forest management. Moreover, they provide practical examples of how to sustain this process. The material does not describe common management procedures in technical detail, which would offer a complete “recipe” of “how to.” I consider the chapters on woodland planting and establishment as the most valuable for my education, while each method and procedure regarding planting and care is written carefully and comprehensibly.
