Biopoli – Sustainable Urban Development 2011

The material covered in the course is very useful to me, because I am very interested in ecology and usually try to learn as much as possible about this field. The material which I have already studied will help me in my future job that can be connected with sustainable urban development. In my opinion, the most valuable aspects of the course were the main idea about protection of the place where each of us live and ways for improving today’s urban situations. I think that it is a quite important theme, especially nowadays, because more and more people begin to forget about our environment, which leads to some negative consequences. All the ideas offered by the course were quite clear, and it was a real enjoyment to study the material. Thank you for providing such a possibility! Ekaterina Petruneva, Student, Saint-Petersburg State Polytechnical University, Russia

As a city dweller, I was especially interested in this course. In these lectures, problems which are very close to us are described, this is why the material provided is very informative. Especially important to me is the fact that in this course the interrelation between environmental problems and the social dimension is set. It is clearly demonstrated that social life depends directly and indirectly on the environment, and environmental quality, in turn, becomes the result of social conditions. Such a view of the problem can help us to find effective ways for solving today’s ecological problems. My work is not directly related to the topic, but, the more I learn, the more I want to know about it and to have the opportunity to spread this knowledge. I believe that knowledge and environmental concern play an important role in establishing an environmentally responsible society. Elena Zorina, Alumna, Tomsk State University, Russia

The material covered in the course module is very interesting. A lot of things in the given course are connected with environmental protection, providing a knowledge base that contributes to the further work of the ecologist. In my opinion, the most valuable aspect of the course is the term biopolis, which implies the well-being of the urban population across the globe. Gennady Potanin, Saint Petersburg State Technological University for Plant Polymers, Russia

I have found a lot of the information interesting and useful and have learnt a lot of new things that can help me in my training process in the protection of the environment and the rational use of natural resources, and will therefore be further useful in my work. As my studies and future work are directly connected with environmental protection, I am concerned with all aspects studied in this course. Olga Koval, Saint Petersburg State Technological University for Plant Polymers, Russia

The course helped me to learn about different methods of how to manage the municipal economy in an environment-friendly way. Now, I have an opportunity to tell my authority about the world practices in this area. I wish that sometime I will be able to put into practice some of this theory. I think it is very important to talk about these problems in kindergartens and schools, because the idea of treating nature kindly has to come into our minds from childhood. Thank you for inspiring me and for consolidating my wish to make neighbourhoods better than they are. Ekaterina Korochkina, Geologist, JSC Uralkali, Russia

Food, Agriculture and the Environment 2011-2013

The material covered in this course is useful to me, because I like to gather new information and to share it with my family and my friends. Maybe it will help me to better analyse the ecological situation in Russia and to think more about local problems in my city. The most interesting aspects for me were the information on biotechnology, food safety and agricultural waste management methods. I was happy to read references and a great number of examples, which were in each theme. Thank you! Ekaterina Petruneva, St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University, Russia

Gennady Potanin, Saint Petersburg State Technological University of Plant Polymers, Russia

The material presented in the course is very informative and useful. I cannot say that my work is directly related to the topic, but I am deeply convinced that environmental problems should be considered in any sphere – be it business, education or governmental policy. That is why I think it is important to be knowledgeable about such problems and the issues related to them. The course gives a very good overview of the problems and of the latest tendencies and changes, both concerning the state of the environment and agricultural strategies. Now I can use this information in the situations related to this theme and also spread this knowledge to raise awareness about it. Elena Zorina, Alumna, Tomsk State University, Russia

Green Salary 2010-2011

The material of the given course considerably expands our outlook and shows the interrelation of economy and ecology, likely the most important issues of present time. It is possible to consider as the most valuable aspect of the course its main concept, namely the reduction of unemployment with the achievement of a favourable environment. Unemployment costs occupy first place among economic harms, and the achievement of a non-polluted environment is the main objective of ecology. These aspects can be further applied at all levels of finance/ecology relations. In connection with my specialisation, I consider very important the establishment of interrelationships between the basic areas, including economy and ecology. Therefore, the application of a given theme in practice is possible in all the subsequent work of the ecologist for the achievement of full perfection. Gennady Potanin, Saint Petersburg State Technological University for Plant Polymers, Russia

In the future, when I become a diplomat expert, I will probably use the principle of the Green Salary as I consider it valuable. The unemployed are happy with good work, and the employer with a protected environment. It is good that people think in this direction. And if the inhabitants of each country and each city think of environmental protection, perhaps environmental contamination will stop and subsequent generations will be given a healthy life. Olga Koval, Saint Petersburg State Technological University of Plants Polymers, Russia

The given theme seems to me interesting because, recently, mankind is disturbed by the unemployment problem. This theme is actual; since 2008 the economic crisis which has had an effect on all spheres of human activity has concerned the damage caused to the economy of our country. I have learnt many new and interesting ways to reduce unemployment and to give people a chance not only to receive money, but also to have a favourable influence on the environment, which, in my opinion is the most valuable aspect of the given theme. Maria Volcova, Saint Petersburg State Technological University of Plants Polymers, Russia

Natural Resources 2010

The material in the given course module is very interesting. Simple people can gather a lot of helpful information from it as well, and not only the experts in the field. The given material allows to expand considerably an outlook in the field as the majority of my disciplines are directly connected with ecology, and consequently with natural resources. I would like to find application of the given theme in my work, in cooperation with Germany in which methods of collection of energy by means of the sun are actively developed. Gennady Potanin, Saint Petersburg State Technological University for Plants Polymers, Russia

Natural resources are an integral part of mankind! Water, soil, wood – all these components are interrelated. But I consider that the most important aspect of the course is the problem of the preservation of water. My activity is directly connected with the analysis of natural waters, therefore this course is an advantage for my process of training and will help me to pass my examinations in the summer. Maria Volcova, Saint Petersburg State Technological University of Plant Polymers, Russia

The material in the course module has helped me to prepare for my examinations at the university on soil science and hydrology. The information is presented in an interesting and simple form. And also, I hope, in August of this year, to do my research work on the theme of “Hydrochemical research of water of the rivers and lakes of the Leningrad region” and as a theoretical basis I will use the information of the given course. Thanks for the informative material. Olga Koval, Saint Petersburg State Technological University of Plant Polymers, Russia

The material covered in the course module helped me to better prepare for the unified state examinations in geography. Nadja Frolova, Student, State Educational Inst. Lycee, Russia
