Tributes from friends

Farewell Agni Vlavianos Arvanitis (1936 – 2018)

It is a real sorrow that we lost Agni. This is a great loss not only for her family members, friends and colleagues, but also for the whole humanity. Her irreplaceable character and dedication make me believe that those who had a chance to know her will miss Mrs. Arvanitis greatly.
Professor Rusen Keles, Ankara University

I loved Agni in the deepest sense of the word. She was a remarkable person. Her relentless efforts to save the planet, to improve human condition and to strive for peace & love were outstanding. My deepest condolences – also on behalf of the CoR-EU – to her Biopolitcs staff, who she considered as her own children.
Mark Dubrulle, President & Executive Director The Club of Rome EU-Chapter

I am sending you my deepest condolences, also on behalf of the Club of Rome. I had the great pleasure knowing Agni since more that 30 years. During the 1980s I was on the Jury of the Onassis foundation for their great international Prizes, and often Agni came to the celebratory events in the most fantastic locations. She always told me about Biopolitics, and I tried to support her as good as I could. In recent times, I met her at Club of Rome Meetings. I hope that Biopolitics will survive the passing of its founder, our beloved Agni.
Prof. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker, Co-President, The Club of Rome, Past Co-Chair International Resource Panel, UNEP

It has been a shock to all of us the news of the death of our beloved and respected Agni. Her exceptional personality, closeness and vast knowledge enriched us all and taught us a respectful, hard-working and careful way of life of the environment. Sometimes it is very difficult to respond to news like this, because in the end it would be enough to say that she was our great and dear friend and that we will miss her warmth and her teaching, which should have been awarded at the highest international levels apart from of many recognitions that she received in her life. In the Xth World Conference we will refer to the painful loss of Agni and this will be picked up by streaming over a year and a half at least.
Professor Marcelo Palacios, President of the Scientific Committee, International Bioethics Society

I and my university colleagues heard with deep regret of the death of Professor Agni Vlavianos Arvanitis, the President and Founder of the Organization. Accept please our sincerest condolences over the loss of the distinguished personality. Her active participation in our annual international Bios-Forums and Olympiads allowed us getting many young people involved in the events. Her memory will live in our hearts forever.
Pavel Lukanin, Director, Higher School of Technology and Energy, Saint Petersburg, Russia

It was with sincere sadness that I was informed of Ms Vlavianos’ passing. She was a “Great Lady” in every sense of the word, a kind person and a true professional. She will be missed by many. At the Columbia Club of Greece, we made a small donation to Columbia University in her memory, to be spent on research concerning the improvement of our environment she so cared about. We posted a farewell and this information on our site.
Lena Papalexopoulou, President, Columbia Alumni Association, Greece

On behalf of Judge Amedeo Postoglione, Director of the International Court of the Environment Foundation (ICEF) in Rome, we express our sadness at learning of Agni’s passing. She was a great champion of the environment and she will be sorely missed. At the ICEF Conference to be held on 20 and 21st April 2018 we will pay tribute to invaluable contribution to environmental rights and justice and to the protection of the planet for future generations.

We still can not believe that Agni does not exist, but we always made big plans with her and very much hoped to move on. The next XXIII Bios-Olympiad 2018 in September will be dedicated to the memory of the outstanding figure and founder of the International Bios-Olympiad in 21 of which she took a direct part in St. Petersburg. It was and remains a bright star as a source of light and hope for the future for international youth in the field of its humanitarian activities of preserving the environment and mitigating climate change. Agni was a great and sincere friend of Russia and I will try as her personal friend to write a significant article in the magazine “BIOSPHERE” about her  outstanding role as a scientist and public figure who brought together many people from 85 countries around the world.
