Sustainable Forest Protection and Management 2011-2013
The course material was very useful and contributed much to my knowledge about issues concerning the forest. It also gave me an in-depth knowledge about the main challenges and emerging issues affecting the world’s forests. It also gave me extensive information about the causes of deforestation, how to overcome it and its effect on the world as a whole. This information was very useful for my work. Additionally, the material has given me a better understanding of how people perceive the forest; not only for wood production but for a balance of wood production and other multiple use activities. I hope this balance of multiple uses of the forest can be incorporated into the forest system in my home country. The most valuable aspect of the course is how to manage the forest for specific purposes. The detailed description of silvicultural techniques used to manage the forest was also very valuable. This is because there is always a conflict of interest related to the management of forests for specific purposes and the use of forests. Besides, some foresters sometimes wonder about the best silviculture technique needed to achieve a specific objective. The reading materials have given an in-depth knowledge of the different ways to manage the forest for specific purposes and the silviculture techniques needed to be applied to achieve these purposes. This has boosted my desire to be a forestry consultant in my home country to give advice to people concerning forest management. I hope to incorporate all the knowledge gained and make useful suggestions to help solve problems related to forest management in my country to improve the forest sector. The course material is very clear and easy to understand. All the topics covered are very important, and I consider them equally valuable. The material presented was able to build upon the topics covered in preceding chapters, and I found it quite interesting. In the end, the course covered the whole concept of forest management. It refreshed my knowledge of forest management practices and gave me, in a simple package, information on what forestry is all about and on the present and future challenges in forest management.
