Program of Hellenic Studies at Columbia University

In 1978, Professor Agni Vlavianos Arvanitis took the initiative to create the Athens Committee for Hellenic Studies at Columbia University (Barnard College). To establish a Department of Hellenic Studies at Columbia University’s Barnard College, the amount of 1,000,000 US$ was required. Donations were collected by Helen Zaousis and Professor Agni Vlavianos Arvanitis from the Costas and Eleni Ouranis Foundation and the Greek Ministry of Culture. Years of struggle and encouragement by Agni Vlavianos Arvanitis followed, and Richard Eels, Advisor to the Chairman of Columbia University, convinced Florida based common friend, Cimon Doucas, to donate his Park Avenue apartment, valued at 1,000,000 US$ for the creation of the Department of Hellenic Studies at Columbia University.
