An important international conference centering on the theme of reforming education of chemists for the 21st century to reflect the aims of sustainable development. The conference took place in Moscow during the second week of October and was attended the by leaders in the field of chemistry.
The plenary session was chaired by Academican Pavel D. Sarkisov, Rector of Mendeleyev University and a member of RAS. The first speakers were Academican Oleg M. Nefedov, RAS and head of the IUPAC ational Commission; B.I.O.president, Dr. Agni Vlavianos-Arvanitis; Deputy Minister of Education of Russia, Vladimir D. Shadrikov and Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Gennady F. Tereshenko. The first part of the plenary ended with a talk by B.J. McGettrick, Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Glasgow.
The B.I.O. President also co-chaired the third symposium session on Chemical Education and Human Health with Academician Vladimir A. Popkov, of the Russian Academy of Education and Head of the General Chemistry Department of the I.M. Sechenov Moscow Medical Academy. Her presentation was entitled The Bio-Environment as the Core Element in Health Education.
